Assessment of the effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on disease progression in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Project Objectives

The aim of this open-label, non-controlled pilot study is to evaluate the effects of rTMS on disease progression in patients with ALS. The inhibitory stimulation protocol cTBS (continuous theta-burst stimulation) is used to reduce glutamate-dependent neurotoxicity, which is considered one of the main pathogenetic mechanisms of ALS.

The aims of the trial are:

  • The primary objective is to evaluate the effects of cTBS on disease progression rate, as measured by the validated scale ALSFRS-R.
  • The secondary objective is to evaluate the effects of cTBS on cortical excitability as measured by TMS.
