LifeHand aims to implant the tf-LIFE (thin-film Longitudinally-implanted IntraFascicular Electrodes) in a volunteer patient with an amputated upper limb.
Specifically, the experimental protocol investigated the possibility to use the tf-LIFE electrodes as neural interfaces for bidirectional communication (from brain to hand and vice versa) between the brain and the cybernetic hand prosthesis.
Electrodes were designed to allow the amputated subject, both to receive sensory information from special sensors embedded in the cybernetic hand, through electrical stimulation, and to send specific commands to control the movement of the prosthesis.
In this phase of the project, the electrodes were removed after one month of training because it represents the maximum time allowed by the authorities for those devices in their experimental phase of developing.
