LifeHand, in other words the implant and experimentation of neural interfaces on a subject whose arm has been amputated, aims, after a series of subsequent steps, to permanently implant and control a cybernetic hand prosthesis.
The experimentation carried out at the end of 2008 at the “Campus Bio-Medico” University Hospital is the final act of a series of research activities that began in 2003 within the scope of the NEUROBOTICS (a combination of the words Neuroscience and Robotics) program, funded by the European Commission.
It should be pointed out that Italy has played a leading role in this research almost funded by the European Commission. In fact, the final experimental phases took place, as already mentioned, at the hospital of the University “Campus Bio-Medico”.
The European project was coordinated by the Bioengineering Group of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, while the conclusive phase of the study was supported by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, through a PRIN program.
