Degree Course in Speech Therapy (L/SNT2)

New course for the 2026/2027 academic year

The accreditation process for the Degree Course by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MUR) is underway.

The Degree Program in Speech Therapy is a modern and qualifying training program, designed to meet the emerging needs of healthcare and communication rehabilitation. The curriculum is based on a contemporary vision of the speech therapist, understood as a healthcare professional with solid clinical skills, the ability to use technology wisely, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

The training course is designed to combine a rigorous theoretical framework with an intense activity of clinical internship, carried out, from the first year, in healthcare facilities and progressively structured over the three-year period, under the supervision of expert tutors.

The teachings, organised into modules, relate to the biomedical, neuropsychological, linguistic, phoniatric, pedagogical and rehabilitative disciplinesTeaching activities include lectures, exercises, workshops, and in-depth seminars, complemented by practical and professional development activities.

The program promotes the progressive acquisition of the operational skills necessary for speech therapy assessment and intervention in various clinical settings.

Il first year It is dedicated to the acquisition of basic biomedical, psychological, and linguistic knowledge, which constitute an educational asset that can be used both in the case of post-graduate continuation and for a possible reorientation of the university path in the biomedical field.

Il second year The program aims to deepen one's knowledge of the clinical and specialized disciplines of speech therapy, focusing on various voice, language, communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Internships continue to consolidate diagnostic and rehabilitative skills, in an integrated program of theory and practice.

Il third year It focuses on completing professional speech therapy skills, with particular attention to assessment techniques and advanced rehabilitation interventions in the main clinical conditions, the organization of professional activity, and preparation for the final exam, in preparation for entering the healthcare profession.

The course promotes opportunities for internships and traineeships in international university and healthcare contexts, deepening teaching through the contribution of visiting lecturers and professors and a constant focus on technological innovation, the use of AI and digitalization in the healthcare sector.

This is a highly demanding course which will open many career opportunities across numerous medical fields.

The Degree Program in Speech Therapy, in compliance with current legislation and European training standards, is designed to train healthcare professionals responsible for the prevention, assessment, and treatment of communication, language, and swallowing disorders in all age groups, pursuant to Ministerial Decree No. 742 of the Ministry of Health of September 14, 1994. Professional practice is available in the private sector, public sector, and freelance.

 

Skills associated with the function: 

The graduate in Speech Therapy acquires skills that allow him to:

  • carry out the speech therapy assessment and contribute to the definition of health needs, as part of the multidisciplinary assessment;
  • develop, plan, and implement personalized rehabilitation programs, with measurable and verifiable objectives, appropriate to the age and socio-cultural context of the person being treated;
  • implement prevention and screening interventions for the early identification of communication-linguistic, learning, voice, and swallowing disorders;
  • use standardized and evidence-based assessment tools, formulating the functional speech therapy diagnosis;
  • independently carry out therapeutic activities to enable and rehabilitate communication, linguistic and cognitive functions;
  • propose and train in the use of aids and assistive technologies, verifying their effectiveness;
  • monitor and evaluate the outcomes of the rehabilitation intervention, remodulating the therapeutic plan based on clinical developments;
  • collaborate with healthcare professionals, teachers, and educators, supporting the family in the rehabilitation process;
  • operate in compliance with ethical, professional, and regulatory principles, ensuring personal protection and data confidentiality;
  • integrate the results of scientific research into clinical practice according to the principles of evidence-based practice;
  • promotes and maintains consultancy and support relationships with the network of professionals (clinicians, teachers, educators) and with the patient's family members in order to achieve and consolidate rehabilitation goals;
  • uses the knowledge acquired in an integrated manner in order to adopt communication and relational behaviors appropriate to the context and professional secrecy while respecting the patient's privacy;
  • interprets and applies research findings to speech therapy practice.

Speech therapy graduates have numerous career opportunities in the healthcare and social care fields, in research, teaching/training, and career counseling.
The speech therapist is a key health professional: he works in hospitals, community services, rehabilitation centers and private practices, following people of every age with language, communication, voice, learning and swallowing disorders.
It can also become clinical mentor, and, service coordinator, or operate in team multidisciplinary for evaluation, prevention and personalized treatments.
A profession with very high employability, growing demand and an increasingly central role in improving people's quality of life.

The speech therapist can find employment:

  • in the facilities of the National Health Service (SSN) and the Regional Health Service (SSR);
  • as a freelancer on an independent basis or in association with other healthcare professionals in professional practices
  • in accredited and affiliated private facilities;
  • in hospitals, local services, IRCCS, rehabilitation centers, RSAs and nursing homes;
  • in multi-specialist clinics, professional offices and on a freelance basis;
  • in the educational and social assistance fields;
  • in consultancy, training and research activities;
  • in service cooperatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
