History of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome

- Bishop Álvaro del Portillo, Prelate of Opus Dei, proposed to a number of professionals and lecturers to establish a university clinic in Rome that could offer tangible solutions to the problem of pain and illness, guided by the Christian spirit of service. An initial working group was set up, called the "Pensatoio" (literally: “Think-tank”), to provide a concrete response to Bishop Álvaro’s proposal through the design of an institution of real excellence that would stand the test of time. The group examined the feasibility of creating a private University and setting up a Faculty of Medicine and Surgery with a Hospital annexed and directly managed by it.

– The Campus Bio-Medico Association was established, as promoting organ of the University.

– The Libero Istituto Universitario Campus Biomedico (CBM) began operations by offering a Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery and a Diploma in Nursing Science (now, a Degree in Nursing). The Friends of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome Onlus, a supporting body of the University, came into being.

– The University Hospital was inaugurated, initially situated in Via Longoni in Rome.

–The Faculty of Engineering was established offering Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Biomedical Engineering. A Degree Course in Dietetics was launched. With the establishment of this second Faculty, the institution adopted its current name: "Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma" (Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome).

– The Centre for the Healthcare of the Elderly (CESA) was inaugurated, set up with the backing of Alberto Sordi on the grounds of what was to become the Trigoria University campus (south of Rome).

– The Schools of Specialization of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery began operation. The School of Continuing Education was established to organize and coordinate Masters's courses and courses in continuing medical education (CME). The University’s Post Graduate Service is now accredited as a CME Provider by the Ministry of Health.

– State President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi received members of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome staff at the Quirinale on the 10th anniversary of the University’s foundation.

– A new Bachelor’s Degree Course in Food Science and Human Nutrition was launched, followed 3 years later by the corresponding Master’s Degree Course.

– 14 March saw the inauguration of the new University Campus at Trigoria. The new University Hospital and the Biomedicine and Bioengineering Advanced Research Complex (PRABB), located alongside the already existing Centre for the Healthcare of the Elderly (CESA), was officially opened. An Oncology Centre took over the former premises of the University Headquarters in Via Longoni in Rome. A new Degree Course in Medical Radiology Imaging Techniques and Radiotherapy was launched.

- The Faculty of Engineering turned 10 years of age and renewed its academic syllabus. The 2010/2011 Academic Year witnessed the launch of the Degree Course in Industrial Engineering, which is a preparatory course for the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering and the Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Development. Three years after its initial launch, the first batch of students graduated from the Degree Course in Food Science and Human Nutrition.

 – The University celebrated its first 20 years of life with the inauguration of the new Educational Complex. Due to its peculiar shape, the building came to be known as "Trapezio" (literally: “Trapezium”). Also in 2013, the University opened its first facility located outside of Rome, namely the Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, based at the Mafalda Luce Centre in Milan.

The plant reduces also 70% of carbon dioxide pollution in the environment. It was confirmed also the JCI accreditation for three more years.

– 25° Anniversary since University foundation; start of the procedure for building new university campus facilities; activation of Physiotherapy Degree.
