The Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome promotes integrated teaching, research, and healthcare structures, pursuing as the main end of all its activities the good of the human person. The University offers students a educational experience aimed at stimulating their cultural, professional, and human growth, proposing the acquisition of skills in a spirit of service. History of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome
1988 - Bishop Álvaro del Portillo, Prelate of Opus Dei, proposed to a number of professionals and lecturers to establish a university clinic in Rome that could offer tangible solutions to the problem of pain and illness, guided by the Christian spirit of service. An initial working group was set up, called the "Pensatoio" (literally: “Think-tank”), to provide a concrete response to Bishop Álvaro’s proposal through the design of an institution of real excellence that would stand the test of time. The group examined the feasibility of creating a private University and setting up a Faculty of Medicine and Surgery with a Hospital annexed and directly managed by it.
1990 – The Campus Bio-Medico Association was established, as promoting organ of the University.
1993 – The Libero Istituto Universitario Campus Biomedico (CBM) began operations by offering a Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery and a Diploma in Nursing Science (now, a Degree in Nursing). The Friends of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome Onlus, a supporting body of the University, came into being.
1994 – The University Hospital was inaugurated, initially situated in Via Longoni in Rome.
1999 –The Faculty of Engineering was established offering Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Biomedical Engineering. A Degree Course in Dietetics was launched. With the establishment of this second Faculty, the institution adopted its current name: "Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma" (Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome).
2000 – The Centre for the Healthcare of the Elderly (CESA) was inaugurated, set up with the backing of Alberto Sordi on the grounds of what was to become the Trigoria University campus (south of Rome).
2001 – The Schools of Specialization of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery began operation. The School of Continuing Education was established to organize and coordinate Masters's courses and courses in continuing medical education (CME). The University’s Post Graduate Service is now accredited as a CME Provider by the Ministry of Health.
2003 – State President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi received members of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome staff at the Quirinale on the 10th anniversary of the University’s foundation.
2007 – A new Bachelor’s Degree Course in Food Science and Human Nutrition was launched, followed 3 years later by the corresponding Master’s Degree Course.
2008 – 14 March saw the inauguration of the new University Campus at Trigoria. The new University Hospital and the Biomedicine and Bioengineering Advanced Research Complex (PRABB), located alongside the already existing Centre for the Healthcare of the Elderly (CESA), was officially opened. An Oncology Centre took over the former premises of the University Headquarters in Via Longoni in Rome. A new Degree Course in Medical Radiology Imaging Techniques and Radiotherapy was launched.
2010 - The Faculty of Engineering turned 10 years of age and renewed its academic syllabus. The 2010/2011 Academic Year witnessed the launch of the Degree Course in Industrial Engineering, which is a preparatory course for the Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering and the Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Development. Three years after its initial launch, the first batch of students graduated from the Degree Course in Food Science and Human Nutrition.
2013 – The University celebrated its first 20 years of life with the inauguration of the new Educational Complex. Due to its peculiar shape, the building came to be known as "Trapezio" (literally: “Trapezium”). Also in 2013, the University opened its first facility located outside of Rome, namely the Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, based at the Mafalda Luce Centre in Milan.
2014 – University Hospital gets Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, thanks to respect of more than 300 quality and safety world recognised standards in healthcare activities.
2017 – University Hospital ends the building of a new trigeneration plant for warming and climatizing the whole Hospital and to supply electrical needs (62%) of the University buildings. The plant reduces also 70% of carbon dioxide pollution in the environment. It was confirmed also the JCI accreditation for three more years.
2018 – 25° Anniversary since University foundation; start of the procedure for building new university campus facilities; activation of Physiotherapy Degree.
2019 - Inauguration of the new Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery in English language and Degree Course in Food Science and Technology and Supply Chain Management. A new Departmental Faculty of Science and Technology for Humans and the Environment is established but in 2023 the Faculty is renamed in Science and Technology for Sustainable Development and One Health.
2020 - At the forefront of Covid-19 research and assistance, a Covid center is inaugurated. A new Master’s Degree Course in Intelligent Systems Engineering is established. The Emergency Department (1st level A&E) and the Palliative Care Center ‘Insieme nella cura’ are inaugurated on September 1st and December 16th respectively.
2021 - The Covid-19 vaccination center is inaugurated. The Emergency Department reopens on 12th July, after a 9-month period of closing, in order to manage the second pandemic wave with the Campus Covid Center 2.0. Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation was founded.
2022 - The University Hospital administration goes to the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation. Two news Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery 'MedTech' and in Biomedical Engineering were launched.
2023 - The Departmental Faculty of Science and Technology for Humans and the Environment is renamed in Departmental Faculty of Science and Technology for Sustainable Development and One Health.
