The second day focused on the ethical challenges that the sector will have to face between new developments in emerging technologies and responsible applications: this completes the mission of this two-day event to outline all the application scenarios of this technology and its impact on society with a human-centered approach.
Rome March, 12: 2025 - New business models and ethical challenges for a more responsible development of AI: concludes with alt15 keynotes, moments of discussion and cutting-edge technological demonstrations by over 35 speakers, EmTech Italy 2025 Human & Tech, the reference event for emerging technologies.
Organized by MIT Technology Review Italy and by the 'Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, the event - which today registered 600 attendees - brought together at Cu.Bo (CUltural BOx) experts international, academic, institutional leaders and industry representatives to explore new developments in emerging technologies in the environmental, urban planning and ethical fields.
With a strong focus on the ethical and legal challenges of technology, artificial intelligence has been hailed as a driver of innovation capable of improving public services, urban planning, and solving global challenges related to sustainability and health.
A new ecosystem
After the institutional greetings, the work began with a moment of discussion between Thomas Poggio, McDermott Professor in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences e Theodoros Evgeniou, Professor and Co-Founder Tremau, INSEAD, on how the deep learning and computational neuroscience is transforming the way we think about the human brain and algorithms, whose functioning is increasingly interchangeable.
The debate then moved on to the corporate venture building, a model of collaboration between large companies and innovators, which is contributing to the birth of a new, more dynamic ecosystem capable of accelerating innovation processes.
In the early afternoon Rhiannon Williams, Editor, MIT Technology Review presented the Annual Report on 10 Disruptive Technologies drawn up by the editorial staff by MIT Technology Review, capable of facilitating more efficient management of urban resources, optimizing transportation, energy and quality of life.
The intervention of is also expected Carlo Ratti, Director, MIT Senseable City Lab, on the role of emerging technologies in redesigning our cities.
A look at ethics and privacy
With the rapid development of AI-based technologies, important new opportunities are emerging. ethical and legal issues regarding privacy, governance and accountabilityThe growing presence of AI in all aspects of daily life raises questions about how to ensure that its use is fair, transparent and respectful of individual rights as illustrated Giampaolo Ghilardi, Associate Professor of Moral Philosophy, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, that explains: We must be aware that today's Artificial Intelligence works through associations in the "indicative" mood, meaning it performs tasks. However, human thought also has the "subjunctive" dimension: it is capable of formulating hypotheses, conjectures, and projects that go beyond data association. AI requires this integration; otherwise, it remains a sterile tool, from our perspective. This is the message we wanted to convey during EmTech, to underscore the importance of the human dimension even in new technologies.
"Artificial intelligence and machine learning are revolutionizing the world, but these technologies are powered by data, which in turn depends on sensor innovation. From integrated photonics to new imaging techniques, advances in this field are laying the foundation for an increasingly intelligent future. Solutions developed for the control and inspection of manufacturing processes are also finding application in monitoring people and environments in healthcare, demonstrating how technological convergence can generate transformative impacts across diverse sectors.", he added BrianAnthony, Associate Director, MIT.nano, with the closing keynote of the event, dedicated to the new frontiers of artificial intelligence.
The two-day event ended with thanks from MIT Technology Review Italy in the person of Henry Cattaneo, editor in chief, who stated: This second day of EmTech Italy 2025 confirmed the extraordinary relevance of this event, held in Italy for the first time, as a global reference point in the world of technology and innovation. Today, we had the opportunity to explore in depth the challenges and opportunities that characterize the future of technology, with presentations by international experts, practical demonstrations, and highly productive networking sessions. Today's discussions focused on topics such as the evolution of digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, its impact on organizations, and the ethical aspects of its use. We noted active participation and interaction among the various panels and are pleased with how the event stimulated new insights, collaborations, and opportunities, helping to pave the way for the next technological challenges.
And with greetings from Andrea Rossi, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, UCBM: "During these two days, thanks to MIT's contribution, we saw our University become a hub of entrepreneurs, scientists, innovators, and professionals, united by a single goal: to develop technologies and innovation at the service of humanity. This is a great opportunity for our University, one we must work on with even greater courage and boldness from now on."
