Rome, 15 June 2026 - From 18 to 20 June 2026 Rome will once again be Capital of Italian forensic medicine, hosting the The 47th National Congress of the Italian Society of Legal and Insurance Medicine (SIMLA) is the most important scientific event of the year in the field of forensic medicine and criminal sciences.. "Forensic medicine is changing to adapt to an increasingly complex reality", Ofchiara Professor Emeritus Francesco Introna, President of SIMLAAfter fourteen years, the Capital regains the center of the national scene of the discipline: "This important event once again sees Rome as the protagonist and crossroads of medico-legal knowledge that also saw its origins in this marvelous city", confirms the teacher Luigi Tonino Marsella (University of Rome Tor Vergata), among the presidents of the Congress.
"The Congress - goes on President Introna - It represents a unique opportunity to address new issues, beyond traditional ones, and to build together the strategic plan on which our discipline will have to be based in the coming years.". The national event is organized by the four main Roman universities - University Biomedical Campus of Rome, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Sapienza University of Rome, and University of Rome Tor Vergata - in an unprecedented synergy that gives the event an extraordinary scientific and institutional relevance. At the centre of the works is the theme "Scientific Innovation in Italian Forensic Medicine: Proposals for a Strategic Plan", with the aim of defining a Three-year Strategic Plan capable of strengthening forensic medicine in public health, the judicial system and civil society. “The 47th SIMLA National Congress - explains Dr. Lucio Di Mauro, National Secretary of SIMLA - It represents a strategic step for Italian forensic medicine: not just a conference, but a forum for scientific, institutional, and professional development to define an increasingly rigorous, visible, and integrated discipline within the healthcare, justice, social security, insurance, and research systems. The goal is to develop a Strategic Plan capable of transforming doctrinal reflection into operational standards, advanced training, applied research, and shared best practices. Among the pillars of the Plan, technological and methodological innovation deserves a prominent place: "It is about improving scientific evidence and using new technologies appropriately, so thaté the methodology of forensic medicine should be strengthened", explains the teacher Vittoradolfo Tambone (Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma), President of the Congress. Right at the Campus Bio-Medico (Via Regdo Scodro, 42 - Cu.Bo building) it will take place the pre-congress day of June 17, with the workshop "AI and forensic medicine".
The official opening is scheduled Thursday, June 18, at 10:00 am a.m. at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart Conference Center (Largo F. Vito, 1) with institutional greetings followed by a round table discussion that will immediately delve into the heart of the conference themes. Among those present, Health Minister Orazio Schillaci, Deputy Justice Minister Francesco Paolo Sisto, the first president of the Court of Cassation Pasquale D'Ascola, the SIMLA president Francesco Introna and the FNOMCeo president Filippo Rings.
The conference program will continue until to June 20th and all sessions will be held at the Conference Center of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. "L'University does not only represent a physical space intended to host the event - points out Professor Antonio Oliva (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart), president of the Congress -, but it constitutes the scientific cultural heart in which forensic medicine develops, renews itself and projects itself towards the future".
