The Chamber of Commerce of Cosenza celebrates Italian academic excellence with the National Award "Antonio Serra", established to promote figures who have contributed to the economic and cultural growth of the territory. The award winner is teacher. Eugenio Guglielmelli, Rector ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, together with other prominent Rectors: Francesco Billari (Bocconi University of Milan), Nicholas Leone (University of Calabria) and Antonella Polimeni (University "La Sapienza" of Rome).

The professor. Eugenio Guglielmelli was awarded for the innovative design of the Study Courses that prepare young professionals to master Big Data e artificial intelligence. "My educational and academic path – said the Rector Guglielmelli – which then took me from the Enrico Fermi High School in Cosenza to the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and, for over 20 years, toUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma where I have been serving as Rector for two years, has increasingly focused on Biomedical Engineering, in particular on robotics for rehabilitation. The integration of digital, communication and robotic technologies is now generating increasingly challenging intelligent systems, to be configured appropriately, centered on the person, to ensure continuous improvement in safety, health, well-being and the quality of social and working life. Universities must promote innovative teaching, which does not excessively reduce the experiential activities to be carried out in person and in multidisciplinary work groups, so as to allow the right training of professional profiles fully consistent with the future needs of the world of work, in particular for solid ethical and social sustainability, as well as economic, environmental and energy sustainability."

During the ceremony, the award winners held a short lecture underlining the key role of universities as drivers of innovation and social progress. Klaus Algiers, President of the Chamber of Commerce, commented: "This Award celebrates the power of ideas and the value of example, capable of inspiring and enhancing the excellence linked to our territory."

The President of the Region, Roberto Eyes, highlighted the importance of rooting Calabrian excellence in the region, while the Minister Anna Maria Bernini he defined the Award as a recognition of merit in higher education.
