September 4, 2017 - The older the patient, the more oral anticoagulant therapy (“OAC”) in patients with atrial fibrillation reduces the incidence of stroke without increasing the risk of bleeding. With this result theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma was awarded at the Congress of the European Society of Cardiology, held in Barcelona from 26 to 30 August, receiving the "Best Posters” for the study on “Thromboembolic risk, bleeding outcomes and effect of different antithrombotic strategies in very elderly patients with atrial fibrillation: a sub-analysis from the PREFER in AF Registry”.
The work was conceived and coordinated by Dr. Giuseppe Patti, Head of the Cardiology Services Simple Operating Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital and was presented in the Catalan city by Dr. Ilaria Cavallari, new specialist in Cardiology.
Thanks to a wealth of data contained in a multicenter registry made up of about 7000 individuals from 7 European countries, the study explored for the first time the effects of TAO therapy in very elderly patients (aged 75 years or over) with atrial fibrillation.
“Data have shown that, even in this category of patients at the highest risk - explained Dr. Patti - the use of oral anticoagulant therapy reduces the incidence of stroke without particularly increasing the risk of bleeding complications: in practice , the older the patient with atrial fibrillation is, the greater the clinical benefit of oral anticoagulant therapy. These findings may have a significant impact on future clinical practice of atrial fibrillation-related stroke prevention."
The European Cardiology Congress, with more than 30.000 registered participants, represents the most important international cardiology event of the year. Out of a total of approximately 4.500 works presented, the study ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma was awarded as “Best Poster in Atrial Fibrillation”. The work was simultaneously published in the “Journal of the American Heart Association”, official journal of the American Society of Cardiology
