A new type of patient
What are the criteria for evaluating, alongside clinical capacity, also that of organization and management of the treatment process of the so-called complex patient? A delicate question, in times of cuts in hospital beds and pharmaceutical costs. Yet, the increase in the average age of the population is also generating a significant growth in this new type of patient: over-65 carriers of four or five chronic pathologies, forced to take different drugs every day to keep them under control. The result? Today, a hospital manager finds it difficult to evaluate the work of his doctors, because he does not have the tools suitable for detecting their 'competence' with respect to any need for hospitalization.
To give the top figures of hospitals the opportunity to delve deeper into the topic of complex patient management, between hospital structures and territorial networks, the Specialization Course in "Complex patient management: appropriateness and competence" was launched in September, jointly promoted by FADOI (Scientific Society of Internal Medicine), Ministry of Health, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, LIUC UniversityCarlo Cattaneo' and SDA Bocconi.
The Campus Bio-Medico contributed to the elaboration of the training contents also on the basis of the experience gained within the University Hospital with the Geriatrics Area, directed by Prof. Antonelli Incalzi. Among the issues that emerged, for example, it is clear how the complex patient is often an elderly person who goes to the Emergency Department or hospital structures, as a primary reference for immediate needs. The objective to be set is instead that of creating and developing, in the area, assistance centers or health homes that are more appropriate for managing your situation over time.
the Specialization Course in "Management of the complex patient: appropriateness and competence" includes four appointments, two in Milan and two in Rome. The Roman dates, organized and held on the Campus, saw the III module on Appropriateness take place on 19, 20, 21 and 22 November and the IV module on Clinical Complexity on 10, 11, 12 and 13 December.
