The aim of the project, half financed by the Lazio Region, is to create a stable connection between the world of research and the world of production of goods and services

Teams of 'brains' engaged in the field of biosciences meet the needs for technological innovation and the demand for experience of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Lazio region, providing them with support in the design and development of cutting-edge devices and solutions for the biomedical sector: is the heart of the 'INTESE' project, promoted by the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome and 50 percent financed by the Lazio Region, in the context of a Call reserved for Universities and Research Centres. The two-year project was presented on Tuesday 21 April in Rome, at the Italian headquarters of the European Commission, together with other initiatives co-financed by the Lazio Region.

With 'INTESE' the know-how of the researchers of the Campus Bio-Medico is put at the service of strengthening some of the productive sectors with the strongest social impact: biomedical devices, neurosciences, biorobotics, pharmaceuticals, agri-food, information, communication, automation and robotics technologies for the health sector. Its main objective will be the development of an 'innovation ecosystem' on the regional territory which makes the link between the universe of researchers from the University and the world of companies producing goods and services more stable and systematic. About fifteen companies have already given official availability to the partnership with the Campus Bio-Medico of Rome in the realization of the aims of the initiative.

“The universities – underlined the Rector of the University, Andrea Onetti Muda – whether state or non-state, they are an integral part of the public higher education system. As such, they cannot escape the challenge of the so-called 'third mission', or transform the knowledge produced and make it available to society and the economic system. This is the context in which the 'INTESE' project fits: helping to create a stable connection between the world of research and the world of production of goods and services. The aim of the project, in continuity with our experiences of past years, is to build and maintain a network equipped with a critical mass of skills and resources capable of increasing the technological competitiveness of local businesses".

Thanks to 'INTESE', in particular, theopportunities for new graduates, PhD students and young researchers of the Bio-Medico Campus to carry out internships, apprenticeships and collaborations for joint research activities with and in companies, for a total of over 22 hours. In addition, patents may be filed jointly with companies or licenses may be granted for the use of technological solutions and patented prototypes within the Bio-Medico Campus to facilitate their marketing. There will be the possibility of seeing the birth of 'spin-offs' in partnership between companies and researchers and the project will also favor the approach of newly 'born' technological start-ups to micro-finance, making them more competitive in their early stages of life.

The input of the 'brains' from the Bio-Medico Campus into the research and development mechanisms of companies will guarantee, moreover, a faster passage of patented devices and experimental technologies from laboratory benches to production chains, because interaction in both directions will be ensured right from the start. The most appropriate innovation interventions and the most useful innovative products to develop will be selected by the Scientific Commission of the Integrated Research Center ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.

At the basis of the 'INTESE' project there will be, on the one hand, the mapping of the skills and technologies developed by the Research Units of the Bio-Medico Campus, with the assessment of their commercial potential; on the other, visits to companies and the preparation of market studies to highlight in which areas Lazio's SMEs have the greatest need to innovate today their products.

The results obtained within the initiative will be promoted through the organization of workshops and scientific events for the diffusion of the 'culture of technology transfer'. Furthermore, on the website of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma a web page will be activated which will present patents and other research results in an advanced stage of development at the University. Finally, a dedicated email address will be available to which you can write to obtain information and general guidance on consultancy or services related to the technological innovation of SMEs.
