The new tool for monitoring epidemics at a global level is active: it is called "GABI" and it is the result of the work of three Italian experts, already known for their commitment to the study of infectious diseases from a holistic perspective. One Health. It is the teacher. Massimo Ciccozzi, Professor of Medical Statistics and Francesco Branda researcher of the Research Unit of Medical Statistics and Molecular Epidemiology of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Together with Prof. Fabio Scarpa, Associate Professor of Genetics at the University of Sassari, defined the "three musketeers of epidemiology" for their continued collaboration in combating microbiological threats. The three experts are part of the WHO Goarn, a global epidemic alert and response network with over 310 institutions involved that aims to provide rapid and effective support for prevent and control infectious disease epidemics and public health emergencies.
GABIE is an acronym that summarizes its areas of expertise: Genomics, AI, Bioinformatics, Infectious diseases, EpidemiologyThe portal provides updated data in monitoring on the progress of epidemics in the world, with analyses based on advanced epidemiological models and the support of theartificial intelligenceThe aim is to make crucial information accessible to both the scientific community and the public, allowing for analysis chiara and timely development of infectious diseases.
The importance of international cooperation
According to the teacher. Massimo Ciccozzi: "Gabie is a key resource for understanding how diseases spread and what strategies to adopt to prevent them. Timely information is essential to better address global health challenges". The portal does not just collect data, but also publishes updated scientific studies to provide a solid base for the community of virologists, researchers and epidemiologists.
The recent Covid-19 pandemic has shown how crucial it is to monitor infections globally. For this reason, tools like Gabie become essential to ensure a rapid and effective response, without alarmism but with information chiarata and based on scientific data. Thanks to this project, Italian epidemiological research confirms its leadership in the surveillance of infectious diseases, with an eye always turned towards the future of global health.
