Research and international conferences for the visiting professor at Sungkyunkwan University

August 20, 2017 - It was Sungkyunkwan University that welcomed the lecturer UCBM Emiliano Schena including visiting teacher for a few weeks of research and international collaborations. In fact, the collaboration between the new associate professor ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma and Prof. Kim Taesung, professor of the School of Mechanical Engineering and vice president of the Research & Business Foundation of the Korean university.

A synergy that is mainly based on studies aimed at developing fiber optic sensors for monitoring physiological parameters in certain situations. The scope is that of biomedical equipment and the aim is to measure the effects of ablation procedures in oncology and cardiology. In the first case, to reduce the risk of proceeding on too small or too extensive portions of tissue in the resection of some tumors through laser treatments; otherwise, in ablations involving the heart, fiber optic sensors help optimize the procedure by measuring the pressure exerted by the applicator with which the doctor operates.

In this regard, Emiliano Schena he presided over the same days Session "Physiological and Behavioral Monitoring" within one of the most important conferences of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the EMBC (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference) 2017 which took place on Jeju Island from 11 to 15 July. On this occasion, two works were also presented UCBM: a sensorized shirt to monitor breathing and one capable of monitoring the cardiac activity of patients.

'It has been a very productive period which paves the way for further exchanges of researchers and doctoral students,' said Prof. Schena. Recalling that "everything was possible thanks to the Grant Program of our University", a call for funding aimed precisely at the internationalization of professors and researchers.
