07 May 2019 - No longer alone in the aisle. Today, doctors also serve in the pharmaceutical sector. This is the message that emerged from the meeting: "Drugs from basic research to therapy: synergies between academia and business on the new employment prospects of the pharmaceutical sector"in Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma

They attended the event Massimo Scaccabarozzi, President of Farmindustria, Alessandro Mugello, President of the Italian Society of Pharmacology and the Professore Giorgio Minotti, Dean of the Departmental Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.

“If it is true that today 65% of children who attend primary school are starting to study for a profession that does not yet exist, it is also true that today many of our students do not know that they can take professional paths that already exist and are waiting to be fed. The doctor is therefore no longer just the one in a white coat, but can become a discoverer of treatment possibilities. And so a series of professional crossroads open up, which our students often don't know about", stated President Minotti.

A sector, the pharmaceutical one, which has 65.400 direct employees and as many in related industries, many of whom are under 35 and with a strong female presence. Since 2018, the Italian pharmaceutical industry has reached the top of the European rankings for production and, after the crises of recent years, continues to experience a season of growth made up of dynamism and continuous innovation.

“We are a sector that produces life, produces value, medicines and to carry on all these activities we need medical skills”, said Massimo Scaccabarozzi, President of Farmindustria.

Above all, scientific and research managements are the figures most in demand by the drug industries.

“We have difficulty finding doctors, because medical graduates are often frightened by the lack of clinical activity, not knowing that it can also be practiced here. In fact, in our companies we carry out clinical research projects. For those who decide to become part of this world, therefore, there may be the possibility of being involved in something wonderful that leads to giving more time to life and more life to time for the sick who are waiting for a cure"continues Scaccabarozzi.

Not just doctors though. All scientific figures are called to make their contribution to pharmaceutical research. As he pointed out, Alessandro Mugelli president of the Italian Society of Pharmacology: “In drug research there is room for people who have knowledge in the fields of biology and chemistry, there are many spaces. These range from the identification of new active ingredients to pharmacogenomics which is revolutionizing the world of therapy"

A world, that of the pharmaceutical industry, which today has opened its doors to students ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma and which he finds in the research laboratories ofAbout Us Roman and in his University Hospital an environment that lives in close contact with the dynamics of development and innovation of new treatments and new devices for diagnosis and therapy. A reality that is in daily contact with issues such as the level of expenditure for medicines, the appropriateness of therapies, the problems associated with hospitalization and the treatment of chronic diseases.

“Today is a day of mutual fertilization between those who train and those who await the new professionals of the future. We know that the world of industry looks to the academy because there are the skills and resources of the future, which are the students”, concluded President Minotti.
