Rome, 9 September 2021 - “In the last year and a half, due to millions of tests not carried out due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have lost much of the benefits obtained in 40 years of breast cancer prevention thanks to mandatory screenings. The consequences on early diagnoses and on the increase in mortality are extremely serious. For this reason, in 2021 Bicinrosa represents even more a moment of awareness for women and for the whole city of Rome to continue the fight against breast cancer”.

To throw the alarm on the lack of prevention it's the professor Vittorio Altomare, director of the Breast Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital and promoter of "Bicinrosa", the non-competitive bike ride organized by the Breast Unit of Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital with the patronage of the Lazio Region and the support of Medtronic.

Sunday 12 September at 10.30 "Bicinrosa" returns to fill the streets of the historic center with color with an avalanche of pink T-shirts. With your own bicycle or using one made available by the organizers you can ride together for the breast cancer prevention and healthy lifestyles to the cry of "No one loses, everyone wins!" through a circuit that from Largo Corrado Ricci will touch Piazza del Popolo and then return to the starting point.

This year the cycle-pedaling organized by the Breast Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital reaches its fifth edition and will take place in conjunction with the "ViaLibera" event of the Municipality of Rome, the cycle-pedestrian network that crosses Rome one Sunday a month on roads reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

"Bicinrosa is an opportunity to draw the attention of women and men to the issue of prevention - remember Deep sea - It is essential to be able to combine sporting activity and proper nutrition which, together with prevention, are essential for winning this battle, which is even more urgent after a year and a half of the pandemic".

The first 5 months of the pandemic saw the collapse of cancer screenings in Italy: 1,4 million exams less for prevention compared to the same period in 2019. Delays in controls result, for example, in a clear reduction of new breast cancer diagnoses (2.099 less) and del colorectal (611 less) (source AIOM). These delays in secondary prevention programs may lead to an increase in mortality in the coming years. In fact, these neoplasms have not disappeared, but will be identified at a more advanced stage, with consequent lower chances of recovery and the need for more resources for treatment".

"Prevention can also be done by practicing regular physical activity and combining the classic walk with some sporting activity" points out Deep sea. This is why "Bicinrosa" invites women and men to prevention by focusing on 3 key objectives: continuous checks and the right treatments to avoid possible relapses; healthy and proper nutrition, for better prevention of breast cancer; sustainable mobility, for the reduction of air pollution, the main cause of a large number of cancers.

Since 2016 the Breast Units, recommended by the European Union, also allow Italian women to access a multidisciplinary team to obtain personalized care in the event of breast cancer. A phenomenon that affects Italy every year over 54 thousand women and that today it is possible to defeat with early diagnosis and through conservative surgical treatments. Effective therapies that allow a rate of patient survival up to 87% 5 years after diagnosis.

The Breast Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico Polyclinic it is one of the 15 Breast Centers identified by the Lazio Region: it treats about 250 cases a year, with growing numbers, and represents an opportunity for treatment and assistance for breast cancer. Reference center in Lazio for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, the unit allows the woman to face the pathology with the certainty of being followed by a team of dedicated specialists, treated according to the highest European standards and accompanied throughout the entire path of the disease.

It joins it the open Breast Outpatient Clinic of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital which offers a early diagnosis service, without the need to book and on the advice of the family doctor, and an evaluation of women with suspected breast cancer (from Monday to Thursday from 9 to 11 by writing to [email protected]).
