Rome, 9 October 2020 - The Nobel Peace Prize 2020 to those who fight hunger and are committed to increasing the well-being of the peoples of the earth. A commitment and a goal that also pass through a conscious investment in young people on global challenges and in creating new professionals that respect the environment, the health of people and territories. A real bridge to the future, as he comments Laura De Gara, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology for Man and the Environment of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.
“This Nobel Peace Prize has in itself the value of representing a result achieved because it shows that a lot has been done to tackle world hunger. Much, too much, but there is still something to do and everyone can and must do something! L'Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, committed to food and human nutrition, has developed - for years - an intense international cooperation activity involving our young people in annual workcamps on malnutrition which take place precisely in the territories where hunger is a dramatic reality. As - concludes De Race - we try to give our contribution to raise awareness among future professionals on the issues of world hunger, malnutrition, the importance of a balanced, varied and accessible diet also for that part of the world population for which undernourishment and malnutrition represent, still today, the leading cause of death".
Only real food sustainability can bring peace and justice, and to achieve it, professionals who are specially trained to bring managerial skills and values to the agri-food industry are needed.
“The fight against hunger and the development of production methods that respect the environment and with adequate nutritional qualities – said Marco Santonic, president of the degree course in food science and technology and supply chain management - it is one of the absolute priorities of our time and is one of the objectives of the UN 2030 agenda. To contribute to this goal, it is essential to train a generation of professionals competent in all stages of the food chain and sensitive to sustainable development and the circular economy. The fact that the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize fell on one of the days in which the younger generations are demonstrating for their own future and that of the planet is an element that must contribute to making everyone reflect. We teach our students, every day, that it is possible to combine environmental protection, the health of people and territories and economic development".
