The work of Andrea Marinozzi about flat foot surgery

16th November 2018 - With the study "Cotton's osteotomy in the correction of acquired flatfoot in adults", dr. Andrea Marinozzi, researcher of the Orthopedic Research Unit and orthopedist of the University Polyclinic, won the "best poster" award at the 103rd National Congress of the Italian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SIOT), which took place in Bari from 9 to 12 November .

Flat foot is a complex deformity which, in adulthood, can also be related to other pathologies such as hallux valgus, tendinitis or osteoarthritis. It is often asymptomatic for a lifetime. However, when the compensation mechanisms of the foot are lost, it can present itself in the initial stages with pain and deformities that are often very disabling. In these cases surgical treatment becomes necessary.

“With Cotton's osteotomy – he explains Andrea Marinozzi – it is possible to realign the foot by cutting the first cuneiform, which is one of the bones that constitute the fulcrum of the arch of the foot. Used in approximately 20 patients, this surgical technique is giving excellent results both functionally and on pain." In fact, the operation does not sacrifice any joint and allows functional recovery in a relatively short time.
