Innovative food products with high nutritional value, 3D printing applications at the micro and nanoscale of new materials and structures for biomedicine, up to research aimed at identifying the immune mechanisms of very aggressive diseases such as acute myeloid leukemia. These are the stories of scientific research told by the young people of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma during Research Day UCBM 2024 celebrated in conjunction with the "European Researchers' Night" cui UCBM participated as every year thanks to Frascati Science.
Elisa De Arcangelis (researcher in Food Science and Technology), Henry Lemma (researcher in materials science and technology) and Andrea Marra (researcher in General Pathology) were among the protagonists of the conference "Stimulating young talents for research and innovation on planetary health" together with the lectio magistralis of the Prof. John H. Martin, Medical Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the City University of New York School of Medicine. Scholar of nerve regeneration, a line of research that was unexplored until a few years ago, is the author of the book "Neuroanatomy", now in its sixth edition in the USA and translated into numerous languages around the world.
The reflection focused on the innovation produced by young researchers and the contribution that it can give to the growth of scientific research. In 2023 UCBM has produced 987 scientific articles with impact factor with an average of 5,5 articles with IF per teacher and touched the 40 university patents of which 12 in co-ownership with companies and research institutions thanks to the work of his 49 research units, 20 laboratories, over 500 researchers among professors, post-docs, doctoral students. 16% of researchers UCBM is in the World's Top 2% Scientists 2023, compiled by Stanford University on Scopus data. The close synergy with the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation ensures continuous interaction between academia and the clinical field for translational research, while the 200 collaborations with institutions public and private and Italian and international companies guarantee the exchange and valorization of knowledge. TheUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma count today the three Departmental Faculties di Medicine and Surgery, Engineering, Science and Technology for Sustainable Development and One Health , with 16 Degree Courses, 4 PhD Courses and a wide range of over 100 post-graduate courses UCBM Academy.
After the interventions of the Rector\Pro-Rector for Research and Coordinators of Research and Third Mission of the three Departmental Faculties, who illustrated the main activities of 2023 and future prospects, in the second part of the afternoon it was the turn of the scientific publication with the "European Researchers' Night", an experiential event dedicated to schools and families that brought hundreds of kids to the University, from local institutes to first-year university students, involving over 10 Research Units of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.
Classrooms and laboratories open to the public for a day in which it was possible know the "secrets" of the food we eat (how do you read a food label?) or enter the infinitely small world of sensors and wearable systems for monitoring physiological parameters in humans and plants (when is a plant "thirsty"?) up to the possibility of trying the use of technological mannequins and latest generation machinery to save lives in a simulated environment.
