Thyroid cancer, chronic low back pain and type 1 diabetes are the areas of the winning studies UCBM

8 March, 2019 - Reward research projects that have a direct impact on the health needs of citizens. This is the objective of the Ministry of Health's call for targeted research, which for 2017-2018 financed three projects coordinated byUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, out of 14 presented by the University. With a success rate of 21,4% (national average 11,4%), the projects signed by Ucbm are conducted by the Pathological Anatomy, Orthopedics and Traumatology and Endocrinology and Diabetology Units.

RAMAN Spectroscopy as an innovative tool to improve diagnosis of thyroid cancer and reduce unnecessary surgery (PI: Dr. Anna Crescenzi), in collaboration with Roma Tre - through the use of Raman spectroscopy - allows to investigate the biochemical composition of thyroid tumors. The ambition is to introduce the technique into clinical practice for a diagnosis without tissue sampling, while paving the way for new therapies.

The project for chronic low back pain is also involved in the treatment, Intervertebral disc regeneration mediated by autologous mesenchymal stem/stromal cells intradiscal injection: a phase IIB randomized clinical trial (PI: Dr. Gianluca Vadalà), to evaluate the effectiveness of intradiscal transplantation of autologous mesenchymal stem/stromal cells in patients with intervertebral disc degeneration (in partnership with the Ca' granda Maggiore Hospital in Milan).

The disease is the leading cause of disability and morbidity worldwide, affecting over 700 million people each year. The project deals with a very widespread pathology Role of post-translational insulin modifications in the pathogenesis, staging and therapy of type 1 diabetes (PI: Dr. Rocky Strollo) together with the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli. Endocrinologists are studying the role of a modified (oxidized) form of insulin in the pathogenesis and early diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and its complications.
