An experience promoted by the University on the occasion of the Year of Mercy

5 April 2016 - About thirty doctors, residents, students, nutritionists, nurses and administrative staff of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma they went to Calabria to put their skills at the service of families of prisoners, the poor, children, young people and elderly people suffering from disabilities.

Thursday 24 and Friday 25 March, guests of the Associazione Presenza Onlus and of its president, don Silvio Mesiti, parish priest of the Co-cathedral of Palmi and historic chaplain of the Prison, the volunteers UCBM they carried out hundreds of specialist visits in the three structures of the Presenza Onlus Volunteer Centre. To these were added numerous other services, such as joint infiltrations, pap tests and home visits. “Unfortunately, there is no shortage of cases that require interventions of a certain importance” commented the professor. Roberto Angioli, professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, at the end of the visits carried out with the contribution of the specialists of the gynecology school.

Friday was instead dedicated to a visit to the Prison of Palmi, the 'super prison' which counts among its inmates some of the leading exponents of terrorist organizations and mafia gangs. The celebration of the Via Crucis together with the inmates of the medium security department deeply marked all the volunteers.

During the meeting with the prison operators, Dr Silvia Manfrini, head of the Simple Operational Unit of Metabolic Diseases of the University Hospital, expressed the desire to activate a collaboration with the Prison, to raise awareness among prisoners on issues such as nutrition and the importance of physical activity. A willingness reiterated by Dr Manon Khazrai, nutritionist and teacher of Food Science UCBM.

“Make the experience of our university available to the territory”, this is Dr.'s suggestion. Roberto De Cicco, gynecologist at the University Hospital, while Dr. Giuseppe Patti from Palma, head of the Simple Operating Unit of Cardiology Services, called for an increasingly coordinated relationship between local GPs and specialists.
