Martina Nicolò's experience, today projected into the international arena
October 26, 2018 - Enroll in a master's degree, carry out a curricular internship at Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and then receive a permanent job offer from the Master's partner group.
Martina Nicolò, participant in the th edition of Master Homeland Security, co-manages the general secretariat of the most important European railway security association, participates in international working groups and follows European and global development projects on training and technologies applied to security.
How did you find out about the Master?
Immediately after the Master's Degree in International Relations, I was selected by a national company for the role of security specialists. So I started looking for postgraduate courses that address security at 360°. The best, in terms of completeness of topics and level of preparation provided, was certainly the Master Homeland Security: a master's degree that combines security and critical infrastructure engineering.
At the end of this course of study, what is your general impression of the Master?
Security is a theme present in every aspect of our society, as well as a now crucial factor in the social, political and economic fields. Each of us is influenced by it every day, with a greater or lesser perception. The range of topics covered during the Master and the quality of teaching have allowed me to have a complete and well-structured approach to security in any field it is considered. The teaching, in particular, is of the highest level thanks to the choice of nationally and internationally recognized teachers, professionals and security experts.
What are your impressions of the internship? Did it help you for the job you do now?
The internship that I carried out at the Italian State Railways was the basis for my knowledge of the activities carried out in the company in relation to railway security and the protection of passengers and assets. As far as the usefulness of the internship for my current activity is concerned, I can say that today I am dealing exactly with what was investigated and concretely carried out during the three-month internship in the company. Having trained on issues such as security and legality during my internship allows me today to develop, for example, guidelines for anti-corruption policies. Having dealt with the issues of international railway safety and having acquired mastery of European management processes, today allows me to co-manage the general secretariat of the most important European railway safety association, to participate in international working groups and to follow European projects and global development on training and technologies applied to security.
