Description of the project

The PLATFORM project has created an innovative platform that integrates advanced technological solutions capable of supporting orthopedic surgeons in the process of planning, carrying out and evaluating the outcomes of tibial osteotomy surgery, a surgical procedure used to correct limb malalignment, with an approach based on the paradigm of "personalized medicine".

The project was carried out by integrating the hospital clinical skills (COT) with the sensory (NCS), advanced prosthetic (AMED), regenerative (UCBM) and nutraceutical (ERFO).

The results obtained are in line with expectations and include:

  • Surgery Planning Software Platform (SPC) that, starting from pre-operative images, allows for optimization of the choice, positioning and type of implant.
  • Customized medical titanium graft to be used in the surgical procedure, integrated with implantable components (screws-plates)
  • Patient-specific cutting guides using Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies
  • Synthesis of ceramic and glass-ceramic nanomaterials to be used as coatings to increase the bioactivity of titanium grafts.
  • Intraoperative guidance system based on a grid of inertial sensors capable of measuring the anatomical data of interest and reporting it on a graphical interface connected via radio
  • Sensor housing shell, made of polymeric material suitable for sterilization and use in the operating room
  • Protocol for functional evaluation to be applied during postoperative follow-up.
  • Prototype of a bone-on-chip device through which it was possible to screen the efficacy of nutraceutical compounds using image analysis techniques.
  • Nutraceutical formulations that promote osseointegration processes, registered with the Ministry of Health

The project's results propose innovative solutions for the fields of implantable medical devices, biomedical instrumentation, sensors, and nutraceuticals, whose applicability is not limited to osteotomy procedures. These innovations may find application in other surgical procedures of orthopedic interest, including, for example, degenerative osteoarticular diseases, fractures with extensive bone loss, and osteonecrosis.
