ESSENCE

Observational study of the nursing care workload in patients hospitalized in medicine and surgery with different care complexities

Project objectives

Primary endpoint:
- Analyze what the predictors of nursing workload are in medical-surgical care units in order to correctly size the nursing staff
- Evaluate how the complexity of care of patients hospitalized in medicine and surgery impacts on the nursing workload and whether it changes during hospitalization.
Secondary endpoints:
- Analyze the nursing workload with the use of standardized tools that identify the ratio of the number of patients entrusted to each nurse.
- Identify the dynamics and activities within the shift that increase the workload perceived by the nurse.
- Evaluate the outcomes of the nursing workload on both the nurse and the patient.
- Validate the new PCA-patient complexity assessment tool in order to monitor progress by type of hospitalization and day of hospitalization
- Identify for each type of complexity what the nursing interventions are and their frequency.
- Track the times of direct nursing care for each level of complexity and for each patient in 24 hours.
