Project objectives“Intestinal microbiote and derived metabolites in myocardial fibrosis and post-operative atrial fibrillation”. The gut microbiota and its metabolites, such as trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), are known activators of the inflammasome and can induce fibrosis generally via the TGFb/SMAD pathway. Atrial tissue fibrosis represents the final common pathway of different risk factors and conditions, and is generally associated with postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF). Many factors are known to influence atrial remodeling and POAF, but the role of the microbiota in modulating cardiac fibrosis has not been evaluated. This study aims to analyze the effect of the microbiota and its metabolites (such as TMAO) in the fibrosis of myocardial tissue (in the right atrium), to evaluate their role in POAF. |
