Professional Licensure

Devising a model for nursing core-competence assessment in professional licensure examination

Project objectives

Nursing profession is in constant evolution, as is health service provision, which has undergone deep changes both at national and international level. The development of a health system providing universal care, promoting health, improving quality of life and allowing for increasingly personalized health projects, as desired by citizens, represents the mission of every health system.

Consequently, the availability of qualified and skilled healthcare professionals is key to offering quality health services. Among those professionals, nurses play a fundamental role in health promotion, maintenance and recovery. By using holistic care models, nurses are present in rehabilitation and support to chronic conditions to optimize resources even in cases of serious disabilities. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing guarantees the acquisition of essential competences that allow graduate nurses to carry out diversified professional nursing roles with proficiency and appropriate ethical behavior.

Therefore, the “Core Competence” project aims at:

  • Developing a model that allows for the assessment of knowledge, competences, attitudes and essential skills that all new graduates must have acquired in a complete and permanent way for initial nursing professional practice
  • Defining universal and objective professional assessment criteria that can be flexible and therefore applicable to all university educational contexts even in case of large student numbers and limited time.
