Towards intervertebral disc regeneration: mesenchymal stem/stromal cells with a novel bioactive hydrogel based approach
Project objectives
The ultimate goal of the project is to bring a therapy based on the use of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) associated with a bioactive hydrogel, from the animal model to clinical translation.
- Objective 1: to develop a new injectable biomaterial functionalized with autologous chondrogenic factors (ACF) with properties and characteristics that allow immediate clinical use.
- Objective 2: To test MSC/hydrogel transplantation for disc regeneration in a preclinical large animal model with the evaluation of the ideal cell dose and to optimize the protocol to achieve IMPD (Investigational Medicinal Product Dossier) for subsequent clinical translation.
