Use of raman spectroscopy as an innovative tool to improve the diagnosis of thyroid cancer and reduce unnecessary surgery

Research Grant, Ministero della Salute

Aim of the projects

The research project will specifically evaluate:

  1. To outline the specific Raman profile of healthy and neoplastic benign and malignant thyroid tissues as a possible marker for the diagnosis to be applied in the clinical framework of the thyroid nodule.
  2. To determine the diagnostic accuracy of Raman spectroscopy in discriminating the different thyroid lesions through specific molecular impressions (histologically and cytologically).
  3. To develop a portable Raman diagnostic device, using sterile fiber probes to be inserted in the nodule for the direct acquisition of the spectra (optical biopsy).
