The Lazio Life Sciences ecosystem represents one of Italy's leading players in the Biotech and Pharmaceutical sectors. To understand its structure, dynamics, and prospects, a survey was conducted that combined documentary analysis, stakeholder mapping, patent trends, and direct consultation with ecosystem players.
The goal is to offer an up-to-date snapshot of the sector, identifying the connections between research, business, and institutions, and providing useful insights to guide future development and innovation policies.
A work built together with the ecosystem
The survey was carried out by theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma thanks to the support of Lazio Innova and Chamber of Commerce of Rome and An industry, involving companies, startups, universities, IRCCS, research centers, accelerators and incubators.
They participated in the survey 61 organizations, helping to define a shared picture of the needs, opportunities and growth prospects of the regional ecosystem.

What emerges from the investigation
A widespread and complementary ecosystem
The mapping returns an ecosystem composed of 176 companies, supported by universities, IRCCS, research centers, startups and incubators that make Lazio one of the main Italian hubs of Life Sciences.
The territorial analysis highlights a chiara Specialization: production is concentrated in the provinces of Latina and Frosinone, research in the main universities and scientific centers, and Rome is also the main hub for innovation and startups.
Innovation and technological trajectories
Patent analysis shows an ecosystem characterized by complementary skills.
On the one hand, the research world is pioneering cutting-edge technologies such as gene therapy, therapeutic RNA, and precision medicine; on the other, companies and startups are developing innovative applications in the fields of advanced diagnostics, artificial intelligence, and personalized medicine.
Collaboration as a lever for growth
The survey confirms a strong propensity toward open innovation. Universities and large companies emerge as strategic partners, while partnerships, industrial PhDs, and technology transfer are considered the most effective tools for strengthening the ecosystem's competitiveness.
Priorities for the future
From listening to stakeholders, some shared priorities emerge: developing new skills by creating increasingly strong connections between research, business, and institutions, attracting private investment, and simplifying access to funding by reducing bureaucratic burdens.

The comparison with the protagonists of the Life Science ecosystem
From analysis to comparison with the'ecosystem. The path started with the White Paper “The Life Science Ecosystem in the Lazio Region” continues with an Addendum dedicated to the evidence emerging from direct discussions with companies, startups and innovative SMEs, research, investors and institutions.
The document collects and analyses the results of the Life Science Business Forum of the Lazio Region, held on 7 July 2026 in Rome, which represented a moment of validation and deepening of the evidence and recommendations formulated in the White Paper.
Through the polling carried out in plenary and Open Innovation Tables, the Addendum highlights the priorities indicated by the stakeholders and compares them with what emerged in the White Paper. Among the central themes: future trajectories of R&D, the role of theArtificial intelligence and personalized medicine, gene therapy, rare diseases and longevity, together with the conditions necessary to support the growth of the ecosystem, fromaccess to capital to governance, from technology transfer to collaboration between research and business.
The comparison returns an ecosystem that does not only ask for generate new innovation, but above all to enhance and grow existing innovation, accompanying it towards the market through capital, partnerships, technology transfer and stable, long-term governance.
