Research areas and methodologies

The main research areas of the unit are:

  • Study of biomarkers in the early diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis and septic shock such as PCT and MR-proADM
  • Rapid molecular methods in the early microbiological diagnosis of sepsis and in the identification of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria
  • Identification and typing of nosocomial strains with Maldi-Tof method and application of cluster algorithming
  • Studies on the reduction of the TurnAround Time (TAT) of urgent exams and the impact of automation on laboratory management
  • Studies of molecular epidemiology, phylogeny and evolution of pathogenic microorganisms associated with relevant infections both in the nosocomial field (microbiological surveillance of hospital infections) and in the community field (epidemiology of infections by hepatitis viruses, arboviruses, diseases transmissible by vectors and retroviruses) than in migrant populations
  • Microbiological surveillance of migrant populations
  • Gene polymorphisms and their association with relevant chronic diseases
  • Characterization of the gut microbiome in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • In 2018, the research unit published 25 articles in international scientific journals with a high impact factor.
