According to the "material culture studies" methodology, the RU explores and critically analyzes the material traces left by the history of medicine and healthcare in general, from ancient hospitals to monuments, from anatomical theaters to specialized museum collections, etc., with the in order to highlight its historical, symbolic and educational value.

Another area of ​​research is that of the "human factor" in the history of science and technology, in the belief that the great technical-scientific breakthroughs have almost always been linked to significant "biographical" aspects of their protagonists: experiences, values, dreams, contaminations with extra-disciplinary interests...
