Educational objectives
The Doctorate in Integrative Biomedical Sciences and Bioethics aims to train and educate graduates in an interdisciplinary approach to research. The PhD course is divided into five curricula, which provide for the development of complementary skills in the field of basic, pre-clinical and clinical research, in academic and non-academic realities, as well as in structures where the increasingly emerging problems relating to Bioethics, such as foundations, non-profit associations, etc. The training offer of the Doctorate in Integrated Biomedical Sciences and Bioethics is also aimed at integrating the various curricula through the monthly holding of seminars on specific topics. Furthermore, starting from the XXXII cycle, two tutors have been assigned to each PhD student so that they can be followed in a complete and continuous way during the entire PhD course. Finally, in recent years, the Doctoral Course in Integrated Biomedical Sciences and Bioethics has implemented the international aspect by offering its students a greater representation of teachers from foreign universities within the College, which constitutes a qualifying aspect for greater competitiveness in the search for a future professional outlet, and at the same time promoting the development of international doctorates in co-supervision.
The PhD in Integrative Biomedical Sciences and Bioethics will be able to:
work as a researcher in the field of basic, pre-clinical and clinical research, in academic and non-academic realities;
plan, coordinate and implement a multidisciplinary research program by interacting with different technical and scientific expertise;
integrate training in the clinical and pre-clinical fields, with bioethical knowledge in such a way as to be able to face the growing complexity of emerging issues relating to bioethics.
Research Areas
The PhD in Integrated Biomedical Sciences and Bioethics is divided into various research fields, ranging from Endocrinology, Osteo-Oncological Pathology, Aging Sciences and Tissue Regeneration, Neurological Sciences and finally Bioethics.
- As far as Endocrinology is concerned, the research will be focused on the cellular biological processes and on the pathophysiological mechanisms that characterize the course of endocrine and metabolic pathologies with particular reference to diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome.
- As far as Osteo-Oncological Pathology is concerned, the research will be focused on the biology and physiopathology of the bone, in the context of bone metastases deriving from solid tumors and osteoporosis induced by antineoplastic treatments.
- As regards Aging Sciences and Tissue Regeneration, the research will be focused on the analysis and deepening of the mechanisms of senescence and organ plasticity, connected to the processes of physiological aging and to the plastic modifications induced by acute or progressive stimuli.
- As far as Neurological Sciences are concerned, the research will be focused on cellular biological processes and on the pathophysiological mechanisms that characterize the course of neurological pathologies, with particular reference to Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy.
- As far as Bioethics is concerned, the research will be focused on the acquisition of the theoretical knowledge of the philosophical schools that inform the different models of Medicine operating, as well as on the knowledge concerning Philosophical Personalism and Work Ethics, with regard to the centrality of the person.
Verification tools
At the end of the first and second year, PhD students must present a written report on the activities carried out and hold a short seminar in front of the Academic Board which decides on admission to the following year. At the end of the third year, PhD students must submit an original Thesis which is submitted to the examination of two external reviewers. On the basis of the reports of the reviewers, the PhD students are admitted to the Final Test which consists in the presentation of the Thesis in front of a Commission composed of the Coordinator and at least two external Commissioners.
