Duration: 3 years
Admission cadence: annual
Deputy Coordinator: Prof. Giuseppe Tonini

Research Areas

The PhD covers the following areas:

  • Bone biology and physiology
  • Pathophysiology of bone metastases from solid tumors
  • Pathophysiology of osteoporosis induced by antineoplastic treatments
  • Planning, management and direction of the diagnostic-therapeutic path of a patient affected by bone metastases
  • Planning, management and direction of the follow-up of a patient affected by bone metastases
  • Orthopedic surgery, radiotherapy, physiatry, algology and radiology on issues concerning the management of bone metastases
  • Clinico-biological pharmacology for the treatment of patients with bone metastases.

Research Objectives

The Doctorate has the following objectives:

  • Preclinical studies on the mevalonate pathway and on drugs that interfere with it (bisphosphonates, amines, etc.), useful for evaluating the molecular basis of the action of drugs on bone
  • Preclinical studies on the mechanisms of neoplastic dissemination and metastasis at the bone tissue level (neoplastic niches, stem endothelial cells, stem cancer cells), which aim to evaluate the modalities of diffusion of neoplastic cells in the bone in order to identify new anticancer drugs for bone metastases
  • Gene profiling modulation studies after administration of bisphosphonates and new phosphoantigens on tumor cell lines, to evaluate new molecular and antitumor effects of drugs undergoing clinical trials.

Verification tools

In-progress verification tools are publications in international journals with impact factor, the organization of seminars, reports and communications at international congresses.
