Areas of involvement
Choose the experience closest to you:
Policlinico / CESA
Volunteering at the Policlinico and CESA focuses on providing direct support to inpatients and rehabilitation centre patients during their stay in our facilities. Students offer a steady and active presence, assisting patients at mealtimes and providing a listening ear and companionship.
Hospice
Volunteering at the “Insieme nella cura” Palliative Care Centre at our University Hospital focuses on listening to, supporting and spending time with inpatients. Students help create a warm and positive atmosphere and, whenever possible, help fulfil the small wishes expressed by patients. The aim is to make the care experience more humane and to support patients’ quality of life during the most delicate stages of their stay.
Piano Zero
The Piano Zero volunteering project, based at the University Hospital, provides dedicated support to patients experiencing greater loneliness and isolation. Students offer attentive listening, a reassuring presence and emotional support, helping to bring comfort and, where possible, fulfil patients’ small everyday wishes. The initiative seeks to make the hospital experience more humane by focusing relational support on those who do not have family or social networks alongside them during their stay.
Casa di Narnia
At Casa di Narnia in Trigoria, a socio-educational residential facility run by the Il Tetto association, student volunteers support children and adolescents aged 13 to 17 who are experiencing family or social difficulties. Volunteers spend time with the young people in a family-like environment, taking part in everyday activities and supporting an educational pathway designed to foster inclusion and personal growth. By sharing time and building meaningful relationships, volunteers can become a positive point of reference for the young people.
Senior Centre and Alzheimer’s Centre – Fondazione Alberto Sordi
Volunteering at the Senior Centre and Alzheimer’s Centre of Fondazione Alberto Sordi involves students in supporting older people and individuals experiencing cognitive decline. Volunteers provide companionship, interpersonal stimulation and active listening, joining residents in recreational and social activities designed to support emotional well-being. The initiative aims to reduce isolation and help participants maintain their remaining abilities through a welcoming, reliable and consistent presence.
Clinic for People Experiencing Homelessness
On Saturday mornings, volunteers at the CISOM Assistance Centre for People Experiencing Homelessness (Corpo Italiano di Soccorso dell’Ordine di Malta), located on Lungotevere Aventino, bring together doctors from the University Hospital and Medicine and Surgery students in the final three years of the programme to provide a general medical clinic for people experiencing homelessness. Volunteers offer healthcare and immediate, practical support to people living in situations of severe social exclusion, with the aim of upholding and restoring the dignity of each person receiving care.
___________
Education through service
Volunteering at UCBM means putting the University’s mission into practice: placing science, skills and time at the service of each person.
