By July, the Oncological Radiotherapy Center in via Longoni will be equipped with two latest-generation linear accelerators and equipment for deep hyperthermia, unique in Italy.
At the end of November, on the occasion of the inauguration of the academic year, the start of the architectural and plant restructuring works of the Oncological Radiotherapy Center in via Longoni was announced.

Today, just over a month later, the first of the two linear accelerators installed in 2005 has already been decommissioned. They will soon be replaced with new latest generation Elekta Versa HD equipment, capable of performing the most modern radiation treatments such as radiotherapy modulated intensity (IMRT), volumetric treatments (VMAT) and stereotaxy, the latter technique particularly effective especially in the case of inoperable tumours.

The first new Elekta accelerator will go online in March and the second in July. They will be 'twin' accelerators that will allow the same type of treatment to be delivered and always guarantee the patient the treatment plan, even in the event of a malfunction of one of the two machines.

The accelerators will also be equipped with the most modern radiotherapy treatment systems, to provide a personalized response to the patient and preserve the healthy tissues and organs surrounding the lesion: image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), breath control during irradiation (respiratory gating), surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT).

Another important novelty concerns the installation – the first in Italy – of the equipment for deep hyperthermia, used in the treatment of certain types of tumors sensitive to a combined treatment with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy.

The renovation works have not reduced the activity of the Polo which continues to guarantee therapeutic treatment plans to all patients, thanks to a reorganization of work and staff shifts from 7 to 21. The inauguration of the new Polo is in program in September.
