Mario Merone the torchbearer representing the student component UCBM
June 17, 2019 - The Torch of the Universiade Napoli 2019 reached the Vatican City on Wednesday 12 June. Symbol of peace, union and brotherhood, it was blessed by the Holy Father at the end of the general audience, from which it then left to reach the Italian Sports Center.
Among the fourteen torch bearers who crossed the Roman route in pairs also Mario Merone, representing the student component UCBM, together with six other students from the Roman Universities Sapienza University of Rome, LUMSA and Pontifical Lateran University.
The students had the privilege of running together with Davide Tizzano, two-time Olympic rowing champion; Massimiliano Rosolino, gold in Sydney 2000 and ambassador of Naples 2019; Valerio Grazini, gold medal in clay pigeon shooting at the Gwangju 2015 Universiade; Jancarlo Cup, gold in Clay Pigeon Shooting at the Shenzen Universiade 2011; Lorenzo Porzio, Olympic rowing bronze; Dariya Derkach, European under 23 athletics champion; Giovanna Giacobbo, volleyball player of the Italian national team.
After traveling via della Conciliazione and the Ponte dell'Angelo to arrive at the Italian Sports Center, the stage ended with a meeting at the CONI headquarters with the President Giovanni Malagò.
