The success rate of the University is 9% compared to a national average of 6.7%

October 21, 2016 - 91 million euros are on the way to support Italian research. These are the funds allocated by the Ministry of Education, University and Research for the 2015 tender on research projects of national interest. Out of almost 4.500 applications presented, the Miur selected 300 projects. In the Life Sciences sector, there are 109 awarded projects and among these, two see theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma as lead partner, with a success rate of 9% compared to a national average of 6,7%.

One of them is the project “Pancreatic β-cell identity, glucose sensing and the control of insulin secretion”, coordinated by prof. Paolo Pozzilli, Professor of Endocrinology ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. At the center of the study are pancreatic beta cells, responsible for the production of insulin, the hormone that promotes the regulation of glucose levels in the body in response to an increase in blood sugar.

It positions itself among the projects co-financed by the Miur also the study coordinated by prof. Mauro Maccarrone, Professor of Biochemistry of the Degree Course in Food and Human Nutrition Sciences UCBM. “Endocannabinoid Signaling in Alzheimer's Disease: A Novel Target for Mechanistic Understanding and Potential Therapeutics” is the title of the work aimed at investigating the therapeutic potential of endocannabinoids in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Among the winners of the funding also the project of the University of Milan "Adaptation and tolerance of plants to abiotic stress in changing environmental conditions" in which Prof. Laura De Gara, Professor of Plant Physiology in the Degree Course in Food and Human Nutrition Sciences UCBM : a work aimed at identifying the molecular mechanisms that allow the plant to respond and adapt to environmental stress, in particular water stress, conducted through the study of rice genotypes.
