An international competition to design the campus of the future
30 January 2018 - A university campus surrounded by greenery and at the same time inserted into the urban fabric. New spaces for university teaching and research. Welcoming environments capable of stimulating the creativity of students and researchers as well as promoting relations with the community. This is not a dream but a development project that theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma will continue for the next thirty years.
It is the promoter of UCBM, Campus Bio-Medico Spa, which already registered in 2016 with Rome Capital the preliminary urban planning project of the 2015-2045 Development Plan "more Campus", to promote an international competition with which to select some of the major architectural firms worldwide for the design of the new masterplan. A design that will cover a total area of 90 hectares and new buildings for approximately 110.000 square meters with the aim of creating the campus of the future: from spaces dedicated to innovative teaching, including for new faculties and central services, to an assisted healthcare residence with activities Of hospice, arriving at student accommodation, sports facilities, study spaces, socializing and aggregation.
The ideas are ambitious and do not neglect any of the three fundamental dimensions of the University: teaching, research and assistance. “In the year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the birth of UCBM – said the Rector of the University, Raffaele Calabrò – we want to move in the direction of a campus that is increasingly at the service of our students, researchers and patients, open to the territory and in dialogue with the city. In this sense, architecture becomes the means to increase our educational passion and transfer it to society in a long-term strategic vision".
Above all, the importance that the project gives to the Third Mission of the University stands out. With a focus on the creation of new spaces for industrial partnerships and platforms that greatly favor the birth of spin off as basic research, UCBM wants to increase the international network also through structures in step with the times. On the other hand, the expected growth promises direct benefits for the community of Trigoria in terms of improvement of local public transport, neighborhood viability and enhancement of the Decima-Malafede Nature Reserve.
But still, it's easy to assume that the masterplan in the next few years it will become a real engine of development with benefits in terms of social related activities and new services for citizens. A task to which, in fact, UCBM he has been performing since 2008, the year of the inauguration of the Trigoria university campus.
