PLATFORM - materials, processes and advanced technologies for the implementation, monitoring and functional validation of osteotomy interventions

Project objectives

The PLATFORM project aims to create an innovative platform integrating advanced technological solutions capable of supporting orthopedic surgeons in the process of planning, carrying out and evaluating the outcomes of an elective operation, ensuring an extremely personalized approach (i.e. based on the “personalized medicine” paradigm) and minimally invasive. Without limitations to the possible generalization of the proposed approach, in this project the platform will be applied in the context of carrying out an osteotomy, a surgical procedure used to correct limb misalignments, joint instabilities or to modify the loads on the joints themselves, in order to relieve particular areas in the event of cases of structural/functional impairment due, for example, to osteoarthritis, osteochondritis dissecans or osteonecrosis. Furthermore, osteotomy procedures are necessary in the presence of serious neoplastic pathologies affecting the musculoskeletal system such as the presence of osteosarcomas, chondrosarcomas and neuroblastomas which require the surgical removal of portions, even of significant size, of the patient's bone tissue.
