The fifth edition of the International Course is scheduled for today and tomorrow on sleep-related breathing disorders directed by professor Manuele Casale. During the initiative, the Exoscopic Surgery Center for the treatment of ENT pathologies of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico was inaugurated

Rome, 13 June 2025 - Obesity and population aging make obstructive sleep apnea a constantly growing phenomenon, with an incidence, in Italy alone, of over 54% of the adult population and an impact on the economic system estimated at over 30 billion euros per year. 

Talking about it for two days in Rome, today and tomorrow, There are hundreds of internationally renowned experts, doctors, university professors and researchers from more than 34 countries around the world. on the occasion of the 5th International Course on Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders scheduled at theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma and organized by theUCBM Academy. The course is directed da Manuele Casale, Full Professor of Otolaryngology at theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma and head of the Integrated Therapies Unit in Otolaryngology at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico. 

An event entirely dedicated to new technologies for diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders, with particular attention to innovative and integrated multimodal surgical approaches for An increasingly personalized treatment in the era of precision medicine. Over 200 professionals will be present and another 150 will be online. – including otolaryngologists, maxillofacial surgeons, pulmonologists, neurologists, physiatrists, dentists, physiotherapists, and speech therapists – to take part in plenary sessions, roundtables, hands-on workshops, and lectures with leading experts in the field. 

Also scheduled are speeches by, among others, the CEO and General Manager of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico Paolo Sormani, of the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma Andrea Rossi and of the Magnificent Rector Eugenio Guglielmelli.

On this occasion, the inauguration of the Exoscopic Surgery Centre for the treatment of ENT pathologies was also held. designed to the highest standards of quality, safety and technological innovation.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) 

Obesity, menopause and advanced age are just some of the risk factors in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)It is a pathology characterized by repeated obstructions of the upper airway during sleep, leading to a decrease in blood oxygenation, frequent micro-awakenings, and significant consequences on the quality of sleep and the management of daily life. 

According to the most recent statistics in Italy (Sda Bocconi 2024), 24 million people aged 15 to 74 (54% of the adult population) suffer from it, 12 million of whom were affected in a medium-severe manner (27% of the adult population, 65% males). In total, however, they are fewer than 500.000 of those have received a diagnosis and little more than 200.000 people receiving treatment. 

Summer can worsen the condition of those who suffer from it Due to heat and humidity, but also sweat and poor hydration. As the incidence of this condition increases year after year, ENT specialists around the world are focusing on precision medicine and personalized treatments to find new treatment options.
