A fundamental tool for observing the infinitely small in the battle between tumor cells and the immune system. Medal from the Presidency of the Republic as a sign of appreciation for the initiative. Rome, 10 November 2014 - Where the battle between the proliferation of tumor cells and the body's defense systems is fought, in an infinitely small dimension of thousandths of a millimetre, the eyes of the researcher can only arrive with the help of sophisticated, expensive technologies which call upon the commitment and generosity of all. It's a team game that doesn't just involve scientists and in which Ron, the National Academy of Santa Cecilia and the State Police Band have decided to participate. A concert in support of cancer research, which the Friends of Campus Bio-Medico Association has organized at the Rome Auditorium next 17 November, at 21.00. The event was awarded a medal by the Presidency of the Republic as a sign of appreciation.
All proceeds from the evening will go towards the purchase of a confocal microscope, to be sent to the laboratories of the Advanced Research Center in Biomedicine and Bioengineering of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. "Thanks to this tool - explains the Professor Marcella Trombetta, Head of the Tissue Engineering Laboratory of the Bio-Medico Campus – it will be possible to observe the meeting between each single cell of a tumor with that of the immune system, the macrophage. It is like witnessing a battle in the world of the infinitely small, to understand exactly how it happens that macrophages suddenly betray our body and, instead of defending it, go on to collaborate with malignant cells".
Tickets for the evening can be purchased at the Rome Auditorium and at shops with Lottomatica services.
"THEUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma – has ofchiarato the President of the University, Felice Barela - is personally involved with its own resources in the project, but the help that comes from initiatives like this is essential to allow our researchers to advance in the study of tumors. Music is also a science and it's nice to see that such different knowledge can collaborate on the same project. I thank all the artists who have agreed to support us and all the people who, by participating in the evening, will allow us to reach the goal".
