Breast cancer: October is 'pink' at the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital

Rome, October 2 2017 – Bet on prevention and early diagnosis for a more effective fight against breast cancer. Also this year the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital adheres to 'Pink October' campaign, the prevention initiative promoted by the Lazio Region. Every Thursday in October and November it will be possible to undergo a mammogram and, if appropriate, also a breast ultrasound. Screening is free and open to all women with between 45 and 49 years old and between 70 and 74 years old, i.e. those not affected by the usual prevention pathways, but subject to a significant percentage of breast cancer.

In Italy this neoplasm represents the leading cause of death for women. In fact, there is a high incidence rate, with over 50 new cases in 2016 (source: Italian Association of Cancer Registries). However, thanks to the prevention and early diagnosis of the disease, today the average survival 5 years after diagnosis is 87% on average (source: The numbers of cancer in Italy-2017, AIRTUM-AIOM).

For the fifth consecutive year, the University Hospital supports the 'Pink October' campaign, demonstrating its commitment to cancer prevention and early diagnosis at any age, so as to provide, where necessary, adequate and less aggressive treatments.

The mammograms will be performed from 5 October to 30 November every Thursday, subject to availability. Acceptance is located on floor -1 of the University Hospital, at the desk dedicated to Radiology.

And as part of prevention month this year UCBM supports the first edition of "Bicinrosa" (www.bicinrosa.it), the amateur ride for the fight against breast cancer to be held Sunday 22 October at the “Nando Martellini” stadium at the Baths of Caracalla, organized by the 'Amici dell'' AssociationUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma' (Onlus), under the scientific direction of Breast Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital.
