16 innovative and strategic projects that will change the way of doing medicine
Today, in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the Sapienza University of Rome, the 16 strategic projects dedicated to life sciences, the result of the synergy between university, research institutions e numerous businesses in the area in the context of "Lazio Regional Operational Program 2014-2019". The projects were produced by the network Life Science Excellence Hub (LSEH), reality co-financed by European Regional Development Fund of which Sapienza is the leader and which also involves theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, l'Catholic University of Sacred Heart, National Research Council, L 'Higher Institute of Health and l'Italian Institute of Technology. The event will be attended by the Rectors of all the partner universities, the Presidents of the research organizations involved and the representatives of Lazio Innova and the Lazio Region.
LSEH projects aim to disseminate and transfer the knowledge gained by scientific bodies within the productive fabric of the territory, promoting a profitable synergy with small and medium enterprises, a collaboration destined to respond to public health needs thanks to farsighted and innovative ideas. Some of these are aimed at creation of miniaturized devices for the early and non-invasive diagnosis of diseases, injuries or infections. Others, however, are designed for the continuous and real-time monitoring of the health of subjects, especially the most fragile ones.
Below are the projects of whichUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma is partner:
- SMiLe, wearable and non-invasive system for continuous and real-time monitoring of heart rate, respiration and perspiration, especially in work and sporting environments.
- HeAL 9000, a human health service robot which, thanks to specific cognitive and interactional abilities, can perceive the surrounding environment, physically interact with the patient and monitor their improvements.
- DHelp4H, an e-community, or virtual space, where users with common interests share useful information with the speed and efficiency of instant messaging.
- PISTIS, an innovative technological platform which, through the synergistic use of sensors, telemedicine, voice assistant, IoT home automation and computer vision, can harmonize the home environment making it a virtual caregiver, a home of the future for the elderly.
- ITHACA, a system that identifies specific monoclonal antibodies which, by recognizing proteins essential to the proliferation of tumor cells, prevent their spread.
>> The project was awarded during the event. For UCBM the personnel involved in the project are: teacher. Alberto Rainer, Scientific manager of the project, professor Marcella Trombetta, Eng. Sara M. Giannitelli, Ph.D. Franca Abbruzzese, Dr Valentina Peluzzi. (*) - INTSEPS extension, integrated microbiological diagnosis device for sepsis: starting from the analysis of a single patient's blood sample, the device will allow to obtain a rapid result both on the microbe causing the infection and on the profile of the patient's immune response to the infection .
>> IThe project was awarded during the event. Scientific manager UCBM: prof. Giovanni Gherardi (RU Applied Bacteriological Sciences). (*)
- TRUST-ME, medical devices based on the use of a biosensor capable of identifying, in a few minutes, the presence in biological fluids of antigens or antibodies of clinical interest, indicative of infectious disease or vaccine protection.
Despite the Covid-19 health emergency with which the LSEH projects have measured themselves since their embryonic stage, every research work has been successfully carried out. Not only that, the pandemic has helped give each project a strong focus on prevention and monitoring in the protection of public health.
(*) - During the LSEH Project event, the results of the strategic projects financed under the 'Regional Operational Program of Lazio 2014-2019' were presented. In particular, the results of the 16 partnership projects were evaluated by a jury of independent experts - made up of a contact person from Banca Intesa San Paolo, a contact person from Confindustria and a manager from the Bicocca University of Milan - who recognized and awarded (EEN Service Award) the ITACHA and INTSEPS projects among the six best in terms of: degree of innovation of the proposed solution, quality of the results produced, potential impact on the regional territory and scalability and replicability of the examined solution.
