She will be one of 14 women out of 30 non-rights advisors on the advisory body of the Ministry of Health. She will remain in office for the next three years
"This assignment was a real surprise for me”. So the profMarcella Trombetta, Professor of Chemical Foundations of Technologies and holder of the Chair of Chemistry of the Faculty of Engineering ofUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, comments 'on the spot' on the appointment of the Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, as a non-executive member of the new Superior Council of Health (CSS). The role has a duration of three years starting from the date of installation.
Trombetta, 46, is also Director of the Chemistry for Engineering and Tissue Engineering Laboratories of the University's Integrated Research Centre. She will be one of 14 women out of the 30 members of the Council, who will therefore represent – unprecedented in the 167 years of the Council's life – almost 50 per cent of a body that Minister Lorenzin has extensively reformed, also reducing its number by 25 per cent of Councilors (which increased from 40 to 30).
"Unlike the illustrious colleagues whom I will support in this adventure and those who have preceded me in this Council – underlines Trombetta – I am not a professor belonging to the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, but to that of Engineering. On the other hand, this shows how the planet of healthcare can no longer avoid considering technologies, especially biomedical ones, as indispensable for prevention, therapy and the health of all citizens”. The CSS revolution also has to do with median age. “The undersigned, with her 46 years, is included among the 'less young' of the group”, jokes Trombetta. “For this - goes on - I hope that the innovations introduced and the courage to renew shown by the Minister will allow this technical consultative body of the Ministry to operate in that spirit of service which the country, and above all the Italians, strongly need at this time".
The Superior Health Council examines everything concerning national public health, on the proposal of the Minister of Health or on the basis of the health contingencies that emerge from the territory. In this sense, it proposes particular scientific investigations, on the basis of potentially useful tools in the future for providing good health services to citizens; proposes the repeal of rules and codes currently in force and the drafting of laws that will constitute the regulatory framework of the future in the health field. It can propose the preparation of specific regulations for public hygiene and expresses opinions on the European regulations to be absorbed into the Italian legislative framework.
What will be the area of greatest commitment in Prof. Trombetta's Council "I will understand – she clarifies herself – when there will be concrete work to be done. I think, however, that I will range above all in the sectors in which I can give my greatest contribution: biomedical devices and food safety”. The prestigious position, assumed free of charge, will now entail for the teacher the need to dilute the time at her disposal, 'dividing' it between the work of the Superior Health Council and the academic and research activity at the Bio-Medico Campus. “It will all depend – clarifies the new Councilor – from the agenda dictated by the Council itself. Obviously, in the event that, but we hope not, there should be emergencies, my commitment to the Council will be greater".
