6 May 2016 - The unsustainable environmental impact of the indiscriminate use of fossil energy sources has now made it necessary to transition towards clean and renewable sources. Recent international agreements (such as the COP21 of December 2015) attest to how this transition is now perceived as urgent and critical. The objective of containing the average rise in temperature, due to the massive emission of greenhouse gases produced by the combustion of fossil fuels, within 2°C can only be achieved with widespread production of energy from sustainable and clean sources.

However, the storage of energy produced from intermittent renewable sources (solar and wind) and the actual economic competitiveness of the plants have not yet been fully resolved. It is in this context that the application of hybrid technologies (that use partly traditional energy and partly renewable sources) it would make a concrete contribution with immediate effect, without causing shocks to our economies, but rather creating new production chains and employment opportunities and at the same time gradually paving the way for zero-emission technologies.

A book by Prof. is dedicated to a concrete example of hybrid technology. Marcello De Falco, of the Departmental Faculty of Engineering UCBM. In "Enriched Methane", published by Springer, the professor collects the contributions of eminent international research groups on hydromethane, or enriched methane, gaseous mixture which can be used, with small and economical expedients, as fuel for traditional internal combustion engines. Since the hydrogen portion can be produced sustainably from renewable sources and its combustion does not generate greenhouse gases, the use of enriched methane instead of traditional natural gas reduces CO2 and polluting emissions by up to 20%, using conventional technologies already available today at competitive prices. The book explains the sustainable production processes of hydromethane and the technologies of use, quantifying the technical-economic benefits and the reduction of impacts.
