With the inauguration of the academic year, the 25th anniversary of the University officially opened
1993. A year of great events such as the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty, the end of apartheid in South Africa and the election of Bill Clinton to the presidency of the United States. But not only. “The first academic year of the year opened more quietly in Rome on 15 October.Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma” said the President Felice Barela, a few minutes from the official opening of the 25th by the Rector.
It was, in fact, even Raffaele Calabrò, before pronouncing the famous formula for launching academic activities, to recall the dawn of the experience in which he had taken part in the early 90s: “Our University has grown a lot. It has become a well-known, appreciated and esteemed reality throughout Italy. If I think back to those first moments, today's reality surpasses (by far!) the ambitions and expectations that I had then imagined. And this is thanks to many people, teachers, entrepreneurs, professionals, nurses, who have put their professionalism and expertise at the service of this great educational, apostolic, academic and welfare enterprise".
“A reality in which in the last 4 years – continued the President Barela – 134 million euros have been invested, thus made available to the community” and that Nicola Zingaretti he defined an "excellent complex system" referring to the difficulties experienced in recent years by the Lazio Region and by the country which "needs precisely this to get out of uncertainty and give the community security and strength". A need, that of the university contribution to society, also underlined by the Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin, in terms of "scientific method and knowledge" to offer to the institutional world.
The univocal reference of the speaker parterre is to the future, which "is already here" for Beatrice Lorenzin and which "the training processes must anticipate" according to Gaetano Manfredi, President of the Conference of Rectors of the Italian universities. And it was the duty of the new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery to close by inviting all colleagues and students to "not be afraid of the opportunities that will come, even in the critical moments that will exist".
The day began with Mass celebrated by Prelate of Opus Dei, Msgr. Fernando Ocáriz, who during his homily recalled the initiative of Blessed Álvaro del Portillo, first successor of Saint Josemaría Escrivá and inspirer of theUniversità Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, citing his own words pronounced at the inauguration of the University in 1993: "may the doctrine and love of Christ orient and inform more profoundly (...) the exercise of the most noble medical and nursing professions: without the guidance and push of this doctrine and this love easily become cold and blind techniques which, instead of serving the good of men, can turn into realities contrary to the life and dignity of man".
The Prelate then continued, addressing the whole community UCBM: "We need teachers who are true teachers, wise and attentive to students and patients. We need pupils who apply themselves with passion to study in order to train and then be able to better serve society. We need administrative staff, at all levels, who fulfill their tasks with joy, in the awareness of contributing to the success of a common work".
